that's like a giant trying to get on the subway....is that nun gonna realize later that that guy was like 6 stories tall and was trying to get tree fiddy from her?

That nun looks oddly Islamic. How strange, as if all religions have been morphed into a single look.

It's like a combination of Catholic imagery and miko imagery. The Catholic wimple with a black kimono, I think? it looks like there's black hakama though you can't really see pleating at the bottom and the way it's all black makes it difficult to discern the individual pieces. Or maybe miko wear headwraps like that, too. It's just that I'd normally associate miko with red and white, and Catholics nuns with black and white, so.

I thought the outfit had a much more Shinto look to it.

Maybe that's it, then! I'm only vaguely aware of Japanese religious imagery. I know the miko because they kept showing up on Wikipedia when I was reading about kimono and stuff, and also they're kind of iconic, but that's about it. I guess Shinto is the next course in my Wikipedia degree program.

You're right that miko wear red and white, but she's not a miko (a young shrine attendant), she's a Buddhist nun, or ama. There are Catholic nuns in Japan, too, but they look like Catholic nuns everywhere else, some in habits and some in casual clothes.

Thanks for the information! Like I said in reply to [info]wrascalism, I know about miko because they're sort of iconic, and besides which they kept showing up when I was reading Wikipedia articles about kimono and other Japanese traditional clothing, but I don't really know much about Japanese religious traditions. So I guess that'll be my next course at Wikipedia school. ;)

I like learning about that kind of thing anyway, so it's good that I now know of a gap in my knowledge that needs filling. :D

Socks and sandals, tsk tsk. That would drive me crazy.

I know, right? The more I look at it, the funnier it gets. I think we need a "Best Post Title" contest.

I think the socks are adapted to sandals - they wouldn't be as uncomfortable or "pully" as a pair of our socks.

Or perhaps she just picked up a pair of these:

I hate wearing flip flops on a good day. Adding socks to the equations gives me the willies.

Aren't these basically just tabi socks? You know, like ninjas wear?

November 25 2010, 06:44:04 UTC 1 year ago

Yeah, they are *actually* tabi socks :/

And I think they're damned cute (but then I think all Japanese anything is damned cute and amazing)

This ad makes the assumption that stepping on a nun is a ~bad~ thing... ;p

I really want this as a poster. I think it's gorgeous, but I am also a total sucker for Japanese graphic arts and advertisements.

I just discovered pinktentacle.com this evening, which seems to be a site dedicated to Japanese design and graphic arts! Do you know of it? If not, you might like to spend a few hours going through the archives. :P
