I have been tracking the evolution of the word "stud" lately. In "Bitch" from 1971, The Rolling Stones clearly relate the term stud to a horse:
Sometimes I'm sexy, move like a stud Kicking the stall all night
This ad, which I would guess is about a year or two later, clearly makes that link as well, with the explicit cowboy connection. By the mid-1970s, though, I remember the term being used generally for a well-dressed and masculine man (sometimes modified by "stylin'") without any specific reference to farm animals.
I can remember when those outfits were very hot. Though nobody would have worn them all starchy like that. The collars usually lay down a little softer. Also nix on the shiny shoes. Adidas Tobaccos or desert boots.
I have about 5 pairs of H.I.S Jeans! One's a burnt red corduroy pair that I love, the other four belong to my fiance. They're all low rise hipster jeans from the late 60s early 70s.
I google-imaged Nick Nolte just to be sure I meant Nick Nolte and not Gary Busey, and I came over here all proud to declare - Hey, that's Nick Nolte in the middle! But I was beaten to the punch... many times over...
Back to bed.
PS: I actually really love that shirt on the right.

"meaning "man who is highly active and proficient sexually" is attested from 1895; that of "any young man" is from 1929."

Nice shirt, Nick, it's almost as hot as your belt and crisp white jeans. Gag.

You're right, the shirt on the right is kind of hot on its own.
