The soulless stare of the one on the left as he's about to eat a spoonful of little faces really creeps me out. It they put Chucky in this ad, it would not be more terrifying.

I'm not sure which sentence of this amazingly verbose ad is the most depressing/hilarious.

Victorian Dollhouse
No ghastly 70s plastic Barbie Dreamhouse for me!

And these two...Collapse )

Not an ad but I couldn't find one.

My ideal gifts were books, particularly these books. It took me until I was 38 before I got it off Amazon. I also wanted a box set of children's classic books (Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Call of the Wild etc...) that was printed very cheaply on pulp paper and were probably edited to hell and back but they were small and there were so MANY of them! My cousin was no reader but she had a set and wouldn't let me touch them. Biiiiiitch.

And finally...
EasyBake I wanted to bake cakes and brownies and muffins but no! They switched out the red checks for pink in the 70s. I hear they're finally putting out a blue/green oven for little boys and girls who hate pink. About time!

Because you know in your heart of hearts that Jem is truly, truly outrageous.

While I never played with the doll line (I had already discovered videogames), I absolutely loved the show.

The very first Barbie commercial from 1959. The way the singer sighs "Baaaaar-bie" still gets to me.

Aww, so cute!

ebony jr dolls feb 1976

Ebony Jr. does not appear to be in print anymore, but Johnson Publishing is still at this address. As for Sunny and Honey, they continue to live on with an updated look digitally. Sorry to say, but it's a pretty sucky website. Not much for a kid to do there! :(

Darryl brandished a wire hanger until she released John. When they told her of their mission, she agreed to ensure that Darryl and John reached their goal. She gave them each a jar of Lustre-Cream and sent them whirling off through time again. When everything stopped spinning, they were confronted with the glassy-eyed stare of Cricket, the talking doll.

"Intruders!" shrieked Cricket. "Are you friend, or foe?"
"Friend," assured Darryl hastily.
"Are you sure about that?" murmered John.
Cricket looked as skeptical as an omni-smiling doll could.  "You must prove yourselves to me by giving me a rare and unusual token of your esteem! I demand that you give me..."
