timely post, unfortunate times at it may be....yeah, whatever happened to the quarantine sign? i think in this day and age people would rather potentially spread a disease than be stuck at home, sadly....just like the 'let's buy ALL the toilet paper' people, cuz um, ??
In the US there's a lot of social pressure on individuals to go to work, no matter the cost.
1. The uninsured and the badly insured can be in for crippling costs if they decide to consult with a doctor. Better pretend nothing is happening. Usually, these are the same people who cannot afford to stay home just in case.
2. Worker's benefits in the US on average are atrocious. Given the lack of robust support for people when they are ill, it is not surprising that most will reserve sick days for ailments that are completely disabling, and still go to work even when they have a flu-like illness.
3. "How dare you use your benefits?!" No, really. It is all too common to give workers benefits on paper and then hold it against them if they dare use these benefits.
I'm American and sadly know about the piss poor way workers are treated. People call off sick and end up fired; people call off sick and don't get paid and that one day's pay affects their ability to pay their bills, feed their family, etc.; and people who purposely kept at part time so the business doesn't have to offer benefits.
Hell, look at walmart where they'll HELP employees sign up for welfare!! WTF?! Pay them more! Give them benefits! That family is worth billions! It's just sickening.
And the CEO of Whole Foods asked employees to donate their sick leave to fellow employees who were sick. Uh??? WHAT?? Billion dollar corporations treat employees like crap. The disparity between rich and poor is only going to grow the longer this goes on.
This stuff really irks my ire. I live on SSDI and some food stamps and I am always low on food and juggle bills. Somehow magically we're suppose to have a few week's food on hand? I'd LOVE TO! Besides riding in the Goodyear Blimp, my other bucket list item is to go into a grocery store and buy whatever I want. I think a lot of Americans would like to be able to do that too.
